If neither of these suits your needs, hopefully others will be updating their work in the coming days.
The factions from the original game are retained, giving you nine factions total to engage in cross universe warfare with. Im biased, but I like Sins of a Galactic Empire the best. Sins of the Prophets Lead Dev 6 years ago. Personally I like both for different reasons. Basically it takes all the improvements from Enhanced 4X and (at this moment) adds three Star Wars factions: The Galactic Empire, The Imperial Warlords, and the Rebel Alliance. Sins of a Galactic Empire has a lot of factions, where as Star Wars: Interregnum currently adds a couple imperial factions to the 4x sins mod. If you are looking for more factions to play with, there is Star Wars: Interregnum ( Installation). Other key features include hero units, a whole new set of planets and skyboxes, and lots of minor bug fixes to the game. This mod tries to flesh out the other non-combat aspects of the game, such as exploration, economics and diplomacy.
As a 4X-RTS hybrid, Sins is focused most on the 'Exterminate' part of the genre. If you're looking for some expanded gameplay mechanics without new factions, check out the Enhanced 4X Mod. :-/ You'll have to wait on Stardock to fix that. Also the mods will not fix some of the base issues with the 1.83 patch, like the lack of weapon sound effects. Of course I'd recommend you spend some time with the base game first, since mods almost always make things more complicated for learning the game. Just a heads up that you have some mods to choose from now.
